High Speed Steel Performance

Salient Features

The outstanding feature of high-speed steel is its high hardness, wear resistance and hot hardness (also known as red hardness). When the temperature of the cutting tool is as high as 500~600 degrees Celsius, the hardness still has no obvious drop, and it can be more than the low alloy cutting steel. Cutting at high speeds, mainly used in the manufacture of cutting tools with high cutting speed, heavy load and high working temperature, such as turning tools, milling cutters, hobs, planers, broaches, drills, taps, etc. Hot and cold deformation molds, high temperature springs, high temperature bearings, etc., which require high wear resistance.

High-speed steel is a high-alloy steel containing a variety of alloying elements and is a type of Leysite steel. It has high hardness, high wear resistance, high heat hardness, high hardenability and sufficient plasticity and toughness, and has good casting, forging, welding and machining properties, so it occupies and plays an important role in tool steel.

Scope of Application

High-speed steel is excellent in toughness, wear resistance and thermoplasticity. Therefore, high-speed steel can be used to manufacture various types of general tools, as well as large-scale and thermoplastic forming tools. Due to the high strength and wear resistance of the steel, it is also possible to produce wear-resistant parts under high load, such as cold extrusion die, but at this time, the quenching temperature must be appropriately reduced to meet the requirements of strength and toughness. High-speed steel is prone to oxidative decarburization and should be taken care of during hot working and heat treatment.
